— On June 8, 2006, Employee #1 was working at (a) gas well drilling site. For three days prior to the accident, the well had been receiving gas, but it had lost circulation. That is, drilling mud was flowing into the wellbore, but there was no mud returning to the drilling mud circulating tank. The employer needed to determine height of the fluid level. So that he could do that, stands of pipe were to be “tripped out.” The first five stands were tripped out uneventfully, but on the sixth stand, the rotating rubber head gasket had to be removed. Suddenly, the well “kicked” during the process. Employee #1 was struck by pressurized mud and gas when he attempted to remove the bolt from the rubber gasket of the rotating head. He sustained injuries to several parts of his body, and he was killed.

As an alternative to asbestos roofing systems, screw down metal roof systems has been extensively used in the industrial and warehousing roofing in India. Trapezoidal roofing sheets are manufactured on state-of-the-art cold roll forming lines in transportable lengths as per the design. Sheets are fixed on to roof structure by specially designed self-tapping screws with aluminium washers, and all the longitudinal and side joints are sealed using silicon sealants and butyl tapes for ensuring a leak proof performance . In this system there is a penetration of roof surface and therefore high quality workmanship and roof maintenance are critical to having leak proof roof. PK Nagarajan, CEO, Tiger Steel Engineering (India), explains, “As an advancement, we have introduced standing seam metal roof systems that completely eliminates penetration of roof surface. Portable roll forming lines housed in a container are transported to the site along with required raw materials. Since the roofing sheets are produced at site, it can be in one single length from ridge to eaves, without worrying about the transportation constraints. This eliminates the longitudinal joints and avoids use of conventional sealing materials making the roof less vulnerable to leakages that arise due to deterioration caused to sealants. Another interesting technological feature of this roof system is held by secret clips that are fixed on the steel structure, the roof panel side laps are rolled over the Clips and seamed in to 3600 double lock by with zinc coating of 180 motorised seaming machine. The floating clips are designed for the thermal movements of roof sheets and double lock side laps along with secret clips provide secure structural performance against wind uplifts besides providing leak proof roofing system.” This is surely one of the significant technological advancements suited to countries like India that experience heavy monsoons in most parts of the countries for about 3-4 months every year. Globally the non-asbestos corrugated roofing sheets are manufactured by using humid cure technology with high quantity cement which results in high density and heavier sheet weight. “HIL has developed breakthrough technology of non-asbestos corrugated roofing sheets by employing autoclave method with lesser quantity of cement which results in low density and light weight sheets. The product manufactured by this method has low drying shrinkage feature as compared to humid cure non-asbestos and asbestos fibre cement sheets and hence superior performance and durability is expected when stored,” says Dhirup Roy Choudhary, CEO & MD at HIL Limited (CK Birla Group).

Periodic burning or disking, to maintain early successional growth and keep a field from becoming a young forest, tends to stimulate the growth of forbs. “In most fields, you can almost count on at least 500 pounds of dry matter [forage] per acre,” Harper says. “We have recorded as many as 4,000 pounds of forage per acre. There’s potentially a lot for a deer to eat in an old field throughout the season, including the winter rosettes of various forbs like old field aster and goldenrod, and especially blackberry leaves.”
